Human beings and horses have a long relationship together, and our love of horses has far from waned, despite the fact that we no longer rely on them for working on the farms or moving troops around in battle any longer.

From art like these bronze horse sculptures https://www.gillparker.com/horses-limited-edition-bronze-sculptures-to-buy to the therapeutic benefits that horses can have for people who suffer from illness, it is little wonder that many of us would love to own a horse of our own.

If the time has come for you to choose your first horse of your own, before you rush out and buy one, here are some of the things that you might want to factor in so that you have a horse that suits you best…

Experience Level – Be honest about the level of riding experience that you have. If you are just starting out and building confidence, then you will want an older horse that has a good experience of riding already. Younger horses can be a challenge and are only suited to more experienced riders who know what they are doing and are able to train the horse correctly.

Money – Horses are expensive to keep so you need to work out what you can afford before you commit. Think about things like vets’ visits, food and equipment that you will need to pay for. It is a really good idea to speak to other horse owners and find out what they pay each month on average for their horse, as you can then factor this into your budget. You should also do some research on what sort of price the horse itself is likely to be so that you don’t get ripped off.

Where the Horse will Live – You need to make sure that your horse has adequate accommodation and also the space to graze and exercise. Some people don’t have this much land at home, so they keep their horses at a stable. Bear in mind when you do this you will have to pay to keep your horse there. Have a look around at local stables and see what options are available to you if this is what you want to do.
