When it comes to choosing a domain name for your business, you want it to be short and punchy, memorable, and make it clear what your business offers. This sounds easy; however, with so much competition, you may find all the names you would like are already taken and you have to make the tough decision between whether to go with a name you think is second best but available or spending money to try to buy the domain you really want.

Get the name you want

When you have decided that the time is right to buy domain name, you may have to experiment to get the right name for you. With over 370 million domain names on the internet, you may find this quite a challenge. You can buy domain names from companies such as https://www.names.co.uk/domain-names; what’s more, you can type in your ideas and the company’s website will tell you whether the name is available to buy or will suggest available variations that may be slightly different but still suitable.

How unique is your business?

Depending on how you brand your business, buying the right domain name may be straightforward; for example, if you want to use your own name, there is likely to be less competition unless it is a very common name. This only works if your business is already well-known and people just want to look it up.

It may also work well if your business only covers a local area; for example, if you are the only locksmith in your town, you can use the name of the town and the word locksmith and you will probably be the first in the page rankings for people searching these terms.

More generic business names will have lots of competition and you will need to be creative to summarise the nature of the business and put your personal stamp on it to make it stand out from your competitors. The shorter the domain name, the easier it is to remember and type, so these domain names tend to have already been taken.

Experiment with names until you find the domain name that is right for you. If all else fails, you may be able to buy a name that has already been taken, but this is likely to require a significant investment.
