Online shopping is a great alternative for those who, like me, dislike having to walk around town looking for bargains then having to carry all of them back to their car which they’ve spent ages trying to park. You also need to pay an average of £3.50 per day to leave a multi-storey parking lot. As I have just described, the experience is becoming less common as people turn to their computers for not only gift shopping but food shopping. The internet has made it easy to find and purchase anything you want.

It is true that some people prefer to touch and feel the product before purchasing, but this market seems to be shrinking. Woolworths, Toys R Us and other famous brands have recently closed their doors. This is a sign that once-thriving shops are facing fierce competition from online retailers. Not only from similar retailers but also because people can buy products online cheaper and without leaving their home. The situation was made worse when the 2G and 3G phone systems enabled internet access. People could now buy goods whenever and wherever they want from their mobile devices. It is no longer important when stores open and close. Only patience is required to wait for delivery.

We are first and foremost buying technology online. In a sense, it’s self-fulfilling. The digital and tech world is a vast one, and includes many categories. Spotify and iTunes are just two examples. Why would you bother buying the latest CD when all of an artist’s albums, remixes, and alternate versions are available to download for a small monthly fee?

Online shopping offers a world of choice that your local physical stores just cannot match. There is such a wide range of goods and services online that your high street simply cannot compete with. The main online purchases are clothes and shoes. Clothing retailers are worried by the fact that people no longer feel the need to try things on. It’s just not something we feel like doing anymore. Coupled with the rise of online grocery shopping, the use of online shopping looks to be growing, until it becomes our dominant way of shopping which it almost is already.
