The Health and Safety Executive is responsible for many of the processes and procedures that organisations have to put in place to ensure the safety of both their employees and general members of the public. The HSE is an independent body which means that it is not directly linked to the government or any particular political party. It is responsible for enforcing the law surrounding health and safety in the UK. As well as this role it also have other important functions which include:

  • Carrying out research into health and safety practices and particular workplace issues.
  • Inspect provisions to ensure they are complying with relevant legislations and subsequently carry out any investigations that may be necessary and possible prosecutions.
  • Creating strategies and policies surrounding health and safety and consulting with relevant bodies and organisations on this.
  • Providing advice and support to employers and individuals on health and safety and safer working practices.
