We will now outline the steps required for a manual steering rack fitment. These checks are relatively straightforward to carry out but can be easily missed which can affect the way the car handles.
Centre the Rack Before Coupling Up
Count the full lock-to-lock turns of the new rack and locate the midpoint. If the column coupling is fitted off-centre the steering wheel will not be straight. Furthermore the rack will reach one end stop before the other, producing a restricted turning circle on that axis.
Check Tie Rod End Torque and Split Pins
Make sure the Tie Rod End(s) have been torqued to the correct torque value for your vehicle. Typically around 35-45Nm for passenger cars, but please check. Also, don’t forget to use a new split pin (lock washer) and bend it fully around the nut. Never reuse an old split pin.
Inspect the Column Coupling and U-joints
A similar amount of wear and tear on the steering column coupling can occur. Check that the U-joint bolts are tightened up properly. Ensure that the pinch bolt on the column coupling is seated properly on the steering column spline. Get the Tracking Set Straight Away
A rack can disturb the wheel alignment. Even if the tie rods were remeasured and returned to the same length after the rack swap, it is recommended that the vehicle is taken to a garage for a tracking check as soon as possible. Even a slight deviation from the true could cause rapid wear on the tires and cause the vehicle to pull to one side.
Road Test for Pull and Play
On a quiet flat road check the car is steering straight up with gentle pressure on the wheel. Check for vagueness or play in the first few degrees of lock (first few turns of the wheel). This will indicate a problem with the new steering rack that will need sorting before you can sign the job off.
By completing these checks in order, you can ensure that the job is completed safely and that your car’s steering is working as it should.
