Cleaning up the Cities

Cities are part of human civilisation and as technology and the way that we live has changed, so have cities. However, more people are now recognising the need to make cities greener and cleaner and get these formerly polluted, yet heavily populated places cleaned up to make them more pleasant places to live and work.

Although you might not consider a city one of the best places to enjoy nature, there are lots of animals that can thrive in the cities as well as plants, and gardens and public parks should also be recognised as important places for animals and plants to thrive.

Pollution in cities throughout the 20th century caused lots of dangerous health problems for the people living there – one of the most famous was the London smog, which in the 1950s became so bad that it was actually seriously harming or killing people, especially those that already suffered with breathing difficulties. Something needs to change and fast forward to now when a lot is being done in London and other cities to improve the air quality for those who live there.

Modern soil remediation techniques that are used by companies like this //soilfix.co.uk/services/soil-remediation/ are also something that can help to regenerate the cities. Sites that were formerly used for industry such as old factories, petrol stations and gas works for example can leave pollution behind which is problematic for the environment and also means that it is not suitable or safe for people to live or work around. However, by cleaning up these sites, they can be redeveloped for housing which helps to solve issues like the housing shortage or given a new lease of life as a business.
