Things to think about Before Buying a Puppy

As much as many of us adore animals, for many people it just isn’t practical to keep one. Especially larger, more expensive and more time-consuming animals such as dogs and horses. For many people, they can still enjoy animals in different ways without having to commit fully, such as by learning to ride a horse at a local stable or by enjoying art such as a bronze animal sculpture.

Unfortunately, some people do commit to an animal without thinking through all of the practicalities. At Christmas animal welfare organisations put out reminders that a dog is for life and not just for Christmas, and rescue centres brace themselves for the January influx.

During these unusual times, with the country in lockdown and people being kept at home, the demand for puppies has soared. This is a huge concern for animal charities and rescue centres who believe that many of these lockdown puppies may be surrendered once the country goes back to normal and the people are not able to look after them during the day.

As well as this, it has also caused concern due to puppy farms. These are cruel places where dogs are bred many times more than they should be, often in poor conditions and with no healthcare. The unscrupulous people who run these farms are in it for only one thing – the profit, so churn out animals with no regard for animal welfare, as well as being very skilled at duping buyers into thinking they are getting a well-cared for puppy from a family home, when the opposite is the case.

If you are thinking of purchasing a puppy remember it is a long-term commitment and have a look here first of all to make sure you don’t fall into the clutches of a greedy puppy farmer.
