When it comes to counselling or the treatment of a mild mental health condition, expectations are the key. This is very true but there is also a line of thought that sees therapists speak to the patients before they take on the proposed course of treatment. It enables the patient to discuss what they want from the treatment and most importantly what their hopes for it will be. This is called solution focused therapy and it is designed to enhance the treatment. It can lead to some excellent results but is quite hard to achieve. In short the process revolves around three questions that the person who is undergoing the therapy has to answer, The therapist’s skill is getting the answer from them. The first part is to ask them what their hopes for the treatment are and how it can help them. These have to be realistic. Growing from this question is what they think their lives will be like after the treatment. The final question is what they have done already to try and improve their condition and what they are doing currently.

The hope of the therapist is that they can start to sculpt the treatment around the patient’s needs and expectations for the treatment. This can result in some of the best outcomes for all of the parties concerned as the therapist is happy they have helped and the patient feels better.
