Whilst it is not generally regarded to be the best of the Monty Python films their 1983 effort “The Meaning of Life” certainly does have it’s high points. One of these has to be the short introductory film The Crimson Permanent Insurance. It features the Monty Python team in only minor roles, if at all, and centres around an accountancy firm full of elderly gentlemen. The firm is part of the financial district of London and it is an old grand building not like the new metal shining 80’s edifices that are being built. What can the older workers do to rebel?
The whole section is visually arresting. The men transform into galley slaves at one point endless working on ledgers until they rise up and start to wear their business suits like pirates.The building is having some work done to it and the sheeting on the scaffolding acts as sails. The building leaves its foundations as the men decide to sail the wide “Accountantsea” and get revenge on their new yuppie North American bosses.
They sail to the USA and stop the bosses, and then, in true Monty Python style,as the tea lady serves them a cuppa and they sing the Accountancy Sea Shanty, they sail over the edge of the world to their doom.
